Spirited Away

[livejournal.com profile] mnemex and I caught Spirited Away last night. Even with dubbing, it's a really good movie. It's up for a Hugo for long dramatic presentation, and IMO, blows both The Two Towers and Chamber of Secrets out of the water. It's the plotting and intelligent script that does it. It outdoes Spiderman as well, although Spiderman's a fine movie. Haven't yet seen Minority Report.

I loved Minority Report, as did Batya, but if you are not a fan of PKD's mind-warps and Spielberg's films, you probably won't like it. It is probably the best thing Spielberg has done in ages, though, and it does a great job with both the effects and the usual PKD questions about casaulity, free will, and the mind.

Of the three Hugo noms I have seen, I think Minority Report is the best by a long way, as Two Towers was disappointing and Spidey was rather basic. I think, though, that Spirited Away will win, as this is simply Miyazaki's year (the Oscar was practiacally a lifetime achievement award). It could be the first film to win both an Oscar and a Hugo.
