Monday night, my computer was working just fine.

Yesterday, I turned it on, and the screen stayed dark. I fiddled with the brightness controls, but the best I got when hitting Fn-F7 was a flickering screen that showed its flickering image only while I held down both keys, and it didn't like showing me anything.

I called [livejournal.com profile] mnemex, who listened to my tearful complaint, and said that I'd probably have to send it back to Asus. I called Asus tech support and was told the same thing.

The guy I spoke to first asked if I'd tried Fn-F7, so I knew I was not failing to locate the button that makes the screen light up. He said that this sounded like a reassembly issue, explaining that my computer's lcd screen and its backlight were completely separate entities, and that fixing one did nothing for the other. Since it's been less than 90 days since my computer was repaired, the only charge to me thus far has been the FedEx laptop kit. Asus covered the shipping cost, and has already received the laptop.

I asked Asus if we had to use FedEx, given the hairpulling isuues from last time. It's the only company they use, but Asus now has the address I want the laptop sent to on file, and I made sure to use no other address on any of the paperwork I filled out. As before, we pulled the hard drive out first, mnemex supervising while I did the actual unscrewing.

I am twitchy without my laptop. I know I used to function just fine with a "mere" desktop, and I still have that desktop. I also have other Devices that cover much of the same ground, in part. But I'm still hoping my laptop gets back soon.

It's probably not going to be happy when it finds out you've been cheating on it while it's away. :)

Technically, I was cheating on it with [livejournal.com profile] mnemex's laptop, as the mini-notebook is not a laptop.

That said, the two machines fill different slots. The laptop has bigger keys and is much better at multitasking. Now, the laptop may have just cause to resent my drooling over the Asus r1fa1 13.3 inch notebook tablet, with a larger hard drive and a swivel screen. But, as long as my laptop comes back intact and functional, I really have no need to get a rival.
