I don't know how good the stage production of Babes in Arms is, but the movie is bad.
We knew there was a dreadful sequence, a minstrel show, so we were steeled for that, and yes, it is bad.
But, the movie as a whole is also bad. There's like one scene where I actually care about the characters. The rest? Well, it's not that the plot is old hat. That really doesn't matter if the script is good and the acting is good. But scene after scene was just annoying to watch. Some of the musical numbers early on were good, but others were lackluster. And the ending sequence had a bit intended to be charming, but which I found creepy.
Ah well.
mnemex said it was useful to see because there's a bit of structure that's important to his character. The rich child actress is folded into Ermengarde from Hello Dolly, and mnemex is playing Horace, her uncle.
