Okay, I think I've got a workable formula.
Step zero: Close all windows and programs.
Step one: Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. Do not hit Ctrl-Alt and an arrow, or the view will rotate.
Step two: Select Stand By from Shut Down menu.
Step three: Unplug machine. The tiny lightbulb icon will be a pulsing blue.
Step four: Close cover.
I did all of this about... 12 hours ago. Power was on, power button was lit up blue, but screen stayed dark. It woke up fast when I hit keys or mouse or something other than the power button, which is, after all, the point of the exercise.
