Hm. It might be easier if I were to delete the iTunes library again, and then look at the original library and import / convert it folder by folder, so that I actually know up front what I'm getting.
That's not a bad idea, particularly as at this stage you won't have a lot of metadata (play counts etc.) built up in iTunes that you'd lose by burning it all down and starting again.
