At Lunacon, Ellen Kushner recommended a book by Elizabeth Knox, The Vintner's Luck, which I just finished reading. It's... okay, try to imagine a blend of the Season of Mists arc from Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Linda Medley's Castle Waiting. Then, ground it firmly in our world, in the first half or so of the nineteenth century.
I'm not quite catching the flavor, of course, but it'll do. I think it slipped completely through our nets when nominating for the Mythopoeic Awards in the late 1990s.
