Yesterday,
mnemex, Beth, and I were bemoaning the loss of our beloved Dynasty, a really good Szechuan restaurant that closed when the building was torn down. We discovered that there are other Szechuan places, but decided not to schlep to them, choosing instead to patronize the 84th Street Ollie's. One of the waitresses there recognized us, as she had been one of the waitresses in Dynasty. Well aware of our tastes, she recommended some nice dishes: Shredded Beef, which was spicy, especially if one ate the small green peppers, and Basil Chicken, which was merely tasty, unless one chowed down on the red dried peppers. She said that Dynasty might reopen in about 2 years.
Today, mnemex and I decided to go to one of the new places we'd learned about, Grand Szechuan East, on 2nd Avenue, between 55th and 56th. Spicy bean gelatin. Spicy shrimp dumplings that are like har gow. Spicy cold chicken. Spicy braised beef. Oh, and mnemex got a hot and sour soup.
My mouth was tingling by the end of the meal, just like it used to when we did Dynasty. Mmmmm.
