Once we were home from Darkovercon, I asked Susan about a song she had us singing at the Saturday night filk. It turned out to be a song from one of S. J. Tucker’s CDs, based on Catherynne Valente’s Orphan’s Tales. And, as it happened, there was a performance scheduled for Tuesday, December 4, as part of NYRSF’s series. We got there, albeit a bit late, and it was delightful. We came home with 3 CDs and both volumes of The Orphan’s Tales. I’ve since read the first part of volume 1, In the Night Garden.

It’s very good. I already knew from the reading that the prose was lyrical without being dense. Now, I got to see the sheer craftsmanship, as the first tale went in and out, layering into tales within tales, like the Arabian Nights. At times, it went at least 6 layers deep. (“Okay, so, the girl is telling the prince’s tale, and he’s listening to the gosling’s tale of the firebird’s tale of the gardener’s tale which just opened up to another person’s tale…”)
