My votes for the Pegasus Awards for Excellence in Filking are now in. There are some tough choices for the voters, especially in the Best Filk Song category. I was able to listen to full versions of all five nominees and spent about half an hour with tears streaming down my face.
I'm starting to see the importance of the Best Classic Filk Song category. I've been in fandom since... call it 1984, though it might have been a year or so earlier. I've been going to filk conventions for quite a while. And, when "Spiral Dance" appeared on the ballot a while back, my first reaction was, "How have I not heard this song before?" This time, I had the same reaction to "Tiberius Rising". There are songs that don't get performed not because they're overdone, but because some people aren't aware they exist, while others assume everyone knows them already.
