A week from yesterday, we had four players for a game with a minimum number of 14. I figured we wouldn't be able to run, and wasn't too upset -- after all, that meant a free weekend.
But, by Friday, we had 10. By Saturday, 12. By Monday, 15. By Thursday, 20 -- all without terribly much effort on our part. And we didn't have to write the game, as the talented Mike Young did that. We got props, stuffed envelopes, did photocopying, and all that.
Friday, that is to say, yesterday, a friend of ours said that he would show up on Sunday, if we liked, help gm the thing, and bring two friends with him who could play. Full cast.
Friday night / Saturday morning, someone who'd filled out a questionnaire with a caveat that she wasn't sure she could show found out that she could show. And someone else wondered if we still had openings.
So, we went from two players to a full game to having two alternates in case of no shows. If everyone shows, they can be animals, audience, co-gms, and a whole bunch of other things.
Okay, true, we have no food budget, but I still feel like the folks in Shakespeare in Love being told that everything would work out all right. How can this be? It is a Great Mystery.
