One of my researchers resigned, which wasn't exactly expected, but not exactly a surprise either. Another one came in late, and made arrangements to make up the time -- he'd been dragged by a bus the night before. That is, the bus doors closed on him when he was half in, and the driver drove for about 30 yards, laughing at him, before opening the door. A lot of folks got off the bus really fast then. He tried to report this to the MTA, that kept giving him an automated line, and the police, who apparently don't want to get involved. He's still trying, not out of major desire to sue, but because this driver is something of a menace. He says she seemed drunk or something.

And blueproofs kept landing on my desk. Each one goes to the researcher in charge of that area, but I look them all over, at least cursorily, thus becoming a bottle neck. And a couple of really dumb things came up. So, I never got to what I wanted to get to -- for some value of "want" -- which was looking over a set of proofs that another researcher just finished with before sending them back for corrections. Doing this is important, but not as important as getting blueproofs out quickly.

Yesterday, I went out on my very first fieldtrip. Nice intro to it, though my stomach wasn't thrilled. I think next time I actually eat something starchy, like crackers, first. We checked out one unpaved road to see if one end had a different name than the other. It did. And the researcher who does the county was saying, "Wait, do we have that street on the map? Uh-oh. There's going to be more development there."

Then, we got the location of a Gap/Old Navy place, and saw another development across the road. We went in to ask for maps, and got them. We also got a tour of a model 2 bedroom apartment, complete with washer, dryer, fridge, microwave, and 2 bathrooms. Nice place.

Meanwhile, I hear that Coliseum may reopen. I hope so. It was the last of NYC's great independent bookstores. It was located near where I used to work, 57th and Broadway or 8th Avenue -- the two avenues are pretty close at that point. I think the new location is going to be on 42nd street, between 5th and 6th -- across the street from the NYPL. That's the New York Public Library, the one with the lions.
