[livejournal.com profile] mnemex and I caught The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at our local theater, as, due to strike, we were both in Queens at the right time.

On the whole, quite good, and more faithful to the spirit of the book, IMAO, than Jackson's trilogy was to Tolkien's. Grand moments were not undercut, and the creators of the film did us the courtesy of presuming that we actually wanted to see a movie that was relatively true to the book, rather than Hipply Modern with the dopey humor.

Whoever was responsible for the battle scenes either was a gamer, consulted a gamer, or actually sat down and thought about how one would use magical beings and sentient animal troupes in tactically effective ways. I approve.

I was very annoyed by a minor point in the Father Christmas scene. F.C. gave gifts to Peter, Susan, and Lucy, and then headed off.

"He didn't give presents to the Beavers!" I whispered, indignantly to mnemex.

After the movie, I called [livejournal.com profile] ebartley, certain that Lewis hadn't forgotten about the Beavers. She checked the book and confirmed that the Beavers did indeed get presents. Mrs. Beaver got a sewing machine, and Mr. Beaver got his dam repaired.

But, minor nit. It's a good movie. I'm not sure if it's a great movie, but it's well worth seeing. And, Tilda Swinton is a great White Witch.
