I had 3 problems with my Tungsten C. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex just helped me fix the last. It feels like he's given me a present twice over.

The first was that there were extra key presses to get a menu. But he showed me that if you click on the top, the title bar, with the stylus, it comes up at once.

The second is that OS5 doesn't support Hackmaster hacks. Now, I didn't have that many. I see I have on my IIIx -- which I'm also keeping! --

AppHack -- This lets me map a bunch of commonly used applications to a two key press thing. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex found a cool freeware thing for OS5 that does basically the same thing. It's called 5Nav Launcher

Fitaly -- Floating keyboard on the screen with a nice layout. I think they're doing a version for OS5. But I don't use it much.

TealEcho -- Shows what I've written. Built in to the Tungsten C.

ClipHack -- Copies more than the built in Clip Board. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex found me ClipPRO. I had trouble working it, but the nice folks in Australia sent me an email walking me through it step by step. It's mostly easy, but I just didn't recognize the last thing I was supposed to do.

Go Type! driver -- This is for a keyboard that doesn't work with the Tungsten C anyway, and besides, I prefer not to use the keyboards with it.

The 3rd problem is Grafitti 2. I hate it. If I'd started on it, I might not, but I didn't, and I'm not giving up my IIIx, which does old, friendly, Grafitti 1. Palm lost a suit to Xerox, which is why Grafitti was changed. The recommended fix is to use TealScript, which is customizable.

The problem was that I couldn't figure out how to work it, and every time I did, well, anything, nagware popped up urging me to register. Before I knew how to use it or if it worked. I don't think so.

It turns out this was because I had not the foggiest idea how to use the program. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex showed me and set things up. I've got my 1 stroke t back! Yay! And my 1 stroke k! Yipee! And I can still do the EZ caps, which I liked. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex turned off auto-cap, so beginnings of sentences aren't capitalized. This could be a nuisance, but with EZ cap, it doesn't have to be. And, when I do my zine for Alarums and Excursions, there are a lot of sentences I want to start with a de-capitalized "re", and this is good for that.

I still don't like the lack of genuine batteries. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex points out that in my convoluted desert scenario, we'd have a lot more to worry about than a Palm that I have to plug in, but I still want it to work my way. I did get the kit with universal chargers and a cute thing that should let me recharge from a car lighter. And Stephen Tihor also found me a site where a company sells this thing that lets one recharge with batteries -- but only 4 or 5 times. I don't know if that's as good as what I have with my IIIx, which takes 2 AAAs about once a month, give or take. But here's the link: http://www.hslight.com/products/p.html
