The laptop is still working, though it takes very little pressure to turn the power on.

I have tried experimenting with "sleep" mode, aka Stand By. As far as I can tell:

If I put it into Stand By and then close the cover, it wakes up.

If I put it into Stand By and wait minutes before closing the cover, it doesn't wake up. However, when I open the cover an hour or so later, I have to hit the power button to wake it up. Hitting keys or clicking the mouse doesn't do it. This means that the whole point of my putting it into Stand By, e.g., so that I do not have to hit the power button, is lost.

Not all Windows boxes work this way. I think that [livejournal.com profile] mnemex's is set differently, and I think that his laptop is technically a Windows box.

Without looking at my laptop, I'm reasonably sure that you can set what you want your machine to do on closing the cover, by going to Control Panel > Power (or maybe Power Options). That's also where you can set things like the length of time your hard drives (if any) spin before powering down, and how long your screen stays up (including a screen saver), while on battery or power cord.

Glad it's still functional. Good luck!

It's set to standby when you close the cover.

It just doesn't do it.

Is it set to be awakened by any external events? (Possible but unlikely.)

I suspect that the appropriate sensor got screwed up when they were replacing the screen.

Could be. I'm not sure it wasn't always this weird. I just didn't tend to use stand by / hibernate modes.

When mine is in standby, the function (Fn) key will also bring it out, if you have one.
