Okay, forgive my ignorance, but this is the very first inauguration I can remember watching.

When they say, "Please stand" for the Justice who does the swearing in, and I'm sitting at home, looking down at my laptop screen, is is appropriate to remain sitting? I mean, it just doesn't feel right to stand, and I can't see the screen if I do.

Stand if you like. It's a measure of respect and, I think, of marking the solemnity of the moment. But if you're at home, you need not.

In person, absolutely, but at home, if I stand, I feel like a giant towering over Internet ants, and that's just not right.
