Okay, forgive my ignorance, but this is the very first inauguration I can remember watching.

When they say, "Please stand" for the Justice who does the swearing in, and I'm sitting at home, looking down at my laptop screen, is is appropriate to remain sitting? I mean, it just doesn't feel right to stand, and I can't see the screen if I do.

I generally do stand when they say things like that, if I'm not hurting too much to make it feasible, but that's a matter of individual preference. If you're in your own home it's appropriate to do either, as you see fit.
