It's been a decent week for food, so far. On Monday,
mnemex and I did sushi at Oki. On Tuesday, I met Beth at Sushi Toro, near Neutral Ground, and decided to do the Sushi Omadase -- Chef's Choice. I made sure to tell the waitress to tell the chef that I liked everything.
And indeed I did. I am not an Uni fan, but this piece of Uni was good. And the eel was great. And the whatever tataki piece. And the other fish I'm not sure what they were. The tekka roll was also good, and useful like ginger is often used -- to clear the palate between fish. I had this urge to melt through the table.
We met mnemex at Neutral Ground, and he got take out from the same restaurant. I had two of the 4 pieces he couldn't finish at once, and they were also great.
Wednesday, I grabbed brie and matzoh, correctly guessing that there'd be food at work. There'd been cookies and chocolate since the day before, and there were more cookies, some brownies, spinach pastries, cheese pastries, and chicken nuggest, as well as non-alcoholic cider. Then, mnemex and I met Beth at the Canal Street Station and went to a Mandarin dim sum place where we ordered off the dim sum menu, rather than carts. The egg custard and lotus paste buns were warm, and I'm getting fond of coconut cubes.
Then, we went to Stephen Tihor's place. Tomas was cooking up a storm, supplemented by Fresh Direct food. Salmon and some kind of prepared lox. Duck pate. Carrots in a Morrocan sauce that went well with, well, everything. Something with peppers and garlic. Various salads. A roast, which I think some part of my brain, not realizing the menu had changed, thought was lamb for an hour or so, but it really was very good beef. Various wines. Various cakes.
Today, mnemex and I went to my folks', and helped my mother clear some space for my brother, who's visiting them and is on crutches. He's due in tomorrow. Mother, mnemex, and I went to the local Chinese place, which was very crowded. We decided to forgo the $12 buffet, which had a lot of American foods -- corn on the cob and a ham, I think -- it kind of looked like the deli / bodega places with that kind of food, mixed with Chinese, and a bit of sushi. But we had some very nice salt squid, house special Chow Fun, and Hunan beef.
On the way home, mnemex stopped into the bakery, which was open. On Christmas. And seems to be a good Italian bakery. He had a biscotti in some coffee. We're now at home and have just finished the excellent tiramisu -- whatever I'd been eating the last 2 or 3 times calling itself tiramisu, well, it wasn't. And a nice chocolate mousse thingy.
Oh, and mnemex is baking a cake now.
Have a chocolatey holiday season, unless eating restrictions prohibt.

Cake is done. (Yay! Only 4 hours, including breaks and shopping, between starting and finishing it; was clearly my least stressful cake experiment).
Note that my sushi, unlike the Omakase (note: k, not d), cost $16:50, when all was said and done, for 15 quite large pieces (ie, I could only manage to eat 11 before getting full, and that was -decidedly- not on a full stomach), while the Omakase is listed as 20+ and really tends to cost $25 or $26. But -damn-, it's worth it (I'd just be very leary of doing Omakase for take-out).
