Many years ago, [livejournal.com profile] acrobatty and I were walking in Central Park. We passed under a tree, and a long green leaf fell slowly and gracefully to the ground.

"Why is that leaf falling?" I asked. "It's not brown or yellow or even red. It's a perfectly good green leaf. Why is it falling?"

At once, acrobatty answered, "Peer pressure."

Leaves suffer from terrible peer group problems. After falling from the trees they hang around in intimidating groups on street corners harassing passers-by. My daughter is strangely drawn to them; I blame my wife's influence, as she always hung out with the deciduous crowd when she was young.
