[livejournal.com profile] mnemex had oral surgery on Thursday. I came down, and we decided to coordinate dinner, since he was supposed to eat before, but not in the hour just before the surger. It was raining, and the really good bar/hamburger joint across the street has been closed for some time, and may be dead. So, we decided to check out Essex, the Glatt Kosher place a couple of doors down. We figured we might get sticker shock, but if so, we could always roam further.

I spotted stuffed derma on their menu for a price I considered ballpark, so we went inside. mnemex ordered a junior pastrami sandwich, hot. I ordered a junior tongue sandwich, also hot. I ordered the derma. I mentioned the farfel, and after double checking and learning that it was basically barley, and came with mushrooms, we got that as well. All of the food was quite good, but the derma -- ah, the derma. That was magnificent.

I've had Sarge's derma, which is good, respectable derma. But this blew it out of the water. This is the stuffed derma which [livejournal.com profile] agrumer's mother once said had probably killed more Jews than Hitler. I wouldn't be at all surprised. I'm sure it clogs up the arteries and all that. But I'm also sure that its victims died with a smile on their faces.

It's not a treat I should have too often. But, man, it's good.

Stuffed intestines of some animal or other. As it was a glatt kosher place, clearly not a pig.

Clearly. ;-)
Sheep, perhaps? If so, then I wonder how it compares to haggis...

It's different. Haggis is blood sausage, more grainy -- barley/oats/whatever. This is more, um, stick to the ribs fluffy.
