Tuesday night,
mnemex, Beth, and I did some Cthluhupunk rpging with PCs that don't generally appear in full sessions. It was a short rescue-the-prisoner mission, fun and cinematic. The four characters involved were:
Scylurus, Beth's PC, on rescue duty
Mira, mnemex's PC, ditto
Yosef, the NPC to be rescued
Kim, the NPC from whom he needed rescuing
When we discussed the game via email the next day, we all remembered that Beth and mnemex rolled higher than I did the a critical moment. However, our memories were astonishingly varied.
Beth: When it came time for Kim to avoid being captured by the Scythians and/or slit Yosef's throat before he was rescued, Kim's roll was surprisingly low.
drcpunk: What was it, do you recall? I remember Scylurus and Mira rolling fairly high.
Beth: IIRC, Kim's roll was 12 (terrible for 5 dice) and Mira's was 19 (fairly good for 4 dice, but not good for 4 dice + 5 bonus dice.)
drcpunk: I forget whether Kim's roll included an explosion (of 1 -- that happened on some roll).
Beth: You had six dice on the table, among them a 6 and a bunch of 1s.
mnemex: Scylurus and Mira clearly needed the practice of working together -- they rolled a 16, on 4 dice with 5 bonus dice.
Kim rolled a 15, IIRC.
Beth: Huh. Neither number is what I remember. I thought the 16 was earlier.
mnemex: Kim's roll had an explosion, Mira's roll did not.
drcpunk: And I remember Kim's roll as 14, and Mira's as 20.
mnemex: Mira's was below 20 (20 would be maximum without explosions; it certainly wasn't that), but might have been 18 or 19.
Beth: The dice were a mix of 4s and 5s, but I don't remember the proportion, though I remember the total as 19. If I'm right about the dice, even if I'm wrong about the total, it was somewhere in the 17-19 range.
What this says about memory is actually rather interesting. We all think we remember both Kim's total and Mira's total, but we each remember different totals in each case.
