Yesterday, we decided to go to Jon and Carol, friends in New Jersey, after far too little sleep, and wound up getting very sick.
We ate at a local greasy spoon, which is generally just fine. We went to Port Authority, having left enough time to a) locate the information booth, which didn't have a person, but did have gate numbers posted on it, b) go to the gate number it said we should go to, c) learn that this was not the right gate number for New Year's Day, and d) go to the actual gate number. The bus arrived 10 minutes late, and
mnemex was already feeling nauseated.
I managed to doze a bit. I woke to hear mnemex telling me he'd been sick. The NJ Transit buses have no bathrooms, and no barf bags, so he'd made a mess in the aisle. After the driver's first stop, mnemex dug up a plastic back. I gave him tissues, and another passenger gave him a newspaper, and he cleaned up as best as he was able. The driver pulled into a depot, and used a hose to get what else he could.
By then, I wasn't feeling so good. I whimpered, but managed to keep from anything messier. We got off the bus and called the house we were going to. It was a block away from the bus stop, but our directions were in terms of compass directions, something we had no way of gauging.
It sounded to me as if the folks in the house were saying they'd send a car out to get us.
"No car, no car!" I said, dreading the idea of getting back in a motor vehicle. mnemex agreed. "Maybe they can drive really slow, and can walk behind them?" I suggested, hopefully. This sounded good to him.
Actually, Jon just walked over, and we followed him back. mnemex got into a Civilization game. We had some mint tea, and I had some flattened coke and crackers, trying to calm my stomach. I went upstairs to take a nap. Well, two naps. One was about an hour and half. I wasn't feeling so good, so I took another, a little shorter, and then proceeded to get sick, though at the proper receptable for such things.
I felt much better, and, figuring the worst was over, tried some more mint tea. Two sips later, I was feeling ill again. After I got sick again, people suggested that maybe mnemex and I should head home. The Civ game had ended, and I wasn't sure if I had a fever or not. Carol drove us out to the Path station, as we all agreed that buses were a Bad Idea just now.
Cars weren't great either. Jon had given us a bunch of plastic bags, and I didn't have time to take the rest out of the bag he'd packed them into before getting sick again. Some time later, mnemex was sick again himself. We got out at the Path station, dumped the bags, and dug up a fresh bag. Path to Q train to 7, where mnemex used the new bag.
After that, we picked up jello and crackers from the store, and I put out a chocolate coke to flatten. We got into bed as quickly as we could. A few hours later, I had a fairly nasty hour or so, but I think that was more gas than anything. So far, stuff has stayed down for both of us, and I've taken the risky step of having oatmeal.
My stomach's still somewhat painful, and we shall see if I'm up for work tomorrow. We've been taking it easy, resting and watching a DVD.
