Last week, I decided to get something that work better for me than the Nokia tablet. I went to J&R, where the guy I talked to said that what I wanted was the T|X, but when we tried my card, the pda didn't even recognize that there was a card in it. He said that the comparably priced IPAC had less memory / space / cool features. He also said that none of the pdas would read a file that wasn't in Documents to Go format. This last I knew was incorrect, so I stopped wasting both our time.
On Sunday,
mnemex and I went to Datavision. I was again pointed to the T|X. It read my card just fine, and could open not only .doc and .xls files from my card, but also .txt. It also allowed me to select just the bits of text I want, rather than either letting me select a few lines or going too fast to select less than the full document.
I've since found that it sometimes has trouble figuring out there's a card in it. I think this is what happened at J&R. The last time this happened with my new machine, I turned on the system sounds, put the card in, heard the chime, saw the confirmation that yes, it recognized my card, then turned the system sounds off.
I've figured out that to view a pdf using the software it came with, I have to send the file to the program on my desktop that turns it into something Palm-readable, and put the result on my T|X. mnemex found me a free pdf reader that's supposed to be better. I guess it is. It reads pdfs as is. But, to display them large enough for me to be able to read, they're displayed large enough that I have to scroll from side to side, which is just no fun. I suspect different programs will prove optimal for different pdfs.
I can't currently unlock TealScript. This is because when I lost my T5, I used my IIIxe exclusively, and set it up with my then-new laptop. Both pdas had the same name, but it didn't matter. My T|X has a different name. I don't think TealScript would work on the IIIxe, and even if it would, I don't need it there. I use Graffitti 1. So, I've emailed TealScript Customer Service to see if the folks there can and will change my registration over to the new device.
I still expect to do the bulk of my writing on the IIIxe. It doesn't hurt my hand when I do lots of writing on it.
I was pleasantly surprised to see
agrumer and
jlighton display mild techie envy of my new toy. I'm used to being behind the curve.
And, I hadn't thought of the T|X as cutting edge. It doesn't have 4 gigs, like the LifeDrive. But, it seems to have what I need, which is sufficient.
mnemex and I did fall in lust with a tablet PC. But, it was $1600, and we weren't in that much lust for it.
