Hot

Wow. Yesterday wasn't as bad as I'd feared, though the living room air conditioner was weak. We took a cold shower and the bedroom air conditioner worked well enough.

Today, we'd planned to see the second Pirates movie -- but our theater doesn't have air conditioning today. Neither did the nearby Baskin Robbins, but that was okay while we were eating ice cream.

At home, the lights stayed very low. The air conditioner flickered in and out. The tv wouldn't go on at one point. Then, everything clicked back on. We're keeping what we can off, and we'll do another cold shower, I'm thinking.

I'm trying to search for news of brown outs, but not finding any. Anyone know the latest?

I'm fearing a repeat of 2003. Are we any better prepared, powergrid-wise? I'm a-thinking not.

There were reports of several manhole explosions in the city, and a problem with feeder cable in northwest Queens (Astoria, LIC, etc. -- but not Jackson Heights; we had no problems, nor was the nabe mentioned in the news). So it's possible that localized brownouts happened, yes.

Probable, nothing. We had the lights turn brown, the air conditioners turn themselves off, and even had the lights go -really- low over one scary 20 minute period, during which even the TV wouldn't turn off.

Brown-out central, here.

There was a report on the radio that north-western Queens was having power supply issues. (Laguardia even had a blackout, causing a bunch of flight cancellations.)

I think this is roughly the story I heard.

It's mighty, mighty hot up here north of the big border, too, but I haven't heard much of anything on the media about brown-outs hereabouts. That's not likely to have any effect on you guys in NYC at all, but we were smoked in 2003 as well, and subsequent summers lead to pleading from OPG (Ontario Power Generation) to not use 'lectricity so much, please. This year things have been much quieter.

Which leads one to worry about the state of the grid.

I think there was a specific problem Con Ed had, albeit one directly caused by the heat. We're currently on low light and air conditioning at my office in an attempt to save power in Queens. A couple of subway lines aren't running in Queens, for the same reason.

Hoping this post will go live -- twice, when I've tried this today, I've gotten "This Domain is for Sale" for www.livejournal.com -- anyone know what's up with that or whether passwords are at risk or who needs to be alerted?

"This Domain is for Sale"

Could this be caused by brown-outs affecting local routing of 'net traffic in your area? I'm not sure, but that seems conceivable. I have seen no such problems while I've been posting comments this morning.
