I've been inspired to reread Patricia McKillip's Fool's Run after hearing [livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen singing a son based on it, for which I'd love to get the words.

Fool's Run may be the worst thing McKillip had published, emphasis on the "may". That said, my primary objection was that the payoff was a letdown after the buildup. I liked the world building and the characters. I still do.

And, on the reread, I'm noticing a bit more about what she was trying to do. I expect I'll still find the second half annoying -- I recall, as with C. J. Cherryh's The Tree of Swords and Jewels, an awful lot of waiting around for, well, not much. But, the first half is still very cool.
