Out of the ER

The ER doctor says my symptoms are consistent with kidney stone. Only test he did was urine, but Josh pointed out this all makes sense given symptoms and Lee concurred. And the doctor said coming in was not dumb.

Conclusions:

-- it is a kidney stone
-- small, about 2 to 3 mm
-- it is not life threatening
-- I can get on the plane
-- I should drink fluids and take motrin for pain
-- I should strain my urine
-- I should avoid salty foods
-- My very clear urine apparently has some blood in it, consistent with kidney stone and also today's pap smear

I now have my very own urine strainer.

Ouch! Good luck with any follow-up treatment and keep drinking plenty of water.

Dietary implications depend a bit on the kind of stones your kidneys are making, but healthy eating, low salt and plenty of water are good for all stones.

I hope this is your one and only stone. Time has thankfully dulled my memory of the intense pain of the two stones I had.

Thanks. Working on the water, forgoing the salty salmon. Just need to get [livejournal.com profile] mnemex his own water bottle so he won't keep emptying mine, though that was most useful at the security checkpoint line.

Ouch! I'm glad you have the beginnings of a diagnosis, though. I hope it doesn't get worse before it gets better.

Copycat. :)

FWIW, Batya got better rather quickly.

Also, it seems like your experience with the Hospital Formerly Known as Booth echoes ours. They might know what they are doing there.

It wasn't pleasant, but no one was mean, just New York City brusque.

Yet another A&Er falls victim to the stone, and now has her very own urine strainer! It's a right of passage.

Considering mine was 14mm - so big that there was no option but to blast it to pieces - I think you might have the worse end of the deal. I hope it passes quickly.

And more A&Eers sound off too! Both Spike and myself have both had kidney stones (and still do on a very infrequent basis). All of your doctors orders sound the same as the ones I got. The first time you get one is the worst. For me, I couldn't figure out what was wrong, couldn't find a comfortable position, and started to get very frightened. I was thinking of everything it could be, and that just got me panic-ish. I'm glad I didn't try to massage your back at the con; that probably would have hurt quite a bit! Get better soon!! Hugs from everyone here in Dundalk.

Thanks. I'm not looking forward to more of these and hope this one passes soon and relatively painlessly, if it hasn't already done so.

I first thought muscle problem and possible yeast infection, and was more worried about the first, wondering if it might be a hernia, if I understand correctly what one is.

Oweee! I've never had one, but I hear kidney stones are pretty painful. I hope you get rid of it soon and feel much better.

From: [identity profile] drcpunk.livejournal.com

Thanks. Yeah, I called it a 4 to 6 till I got to the ER the first time, then a 7 or 8. I don't know if my numbers on the pain scale match what the nurses and doctors think. I tend to leave room at the top.

You have my sympathies, Lisa. Kidney stones are one of the ailments I dread with a rather intense trepidation... 8(

Get well soon!

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. I'm glad that's "all" it is, but still.... Also, yay for actual diagnosis, some confidence, and being able to fly.

From: [identity profile] drcpunk.livejournal.com

Definitely. The worst problem I suffered from on the flight was the full bladder when we landed. I even managed to doze. Thanks.

Thanks.

Actually, there are lots of things I'm really glad it's not! And, I'm also really glad the motrin seems to be working.

From: [identity profile] drcpunk.livejournal.com

Yeah. The thing is, though, I'm really lucky. Josh was with me during the worst of it and both ER visits, we had transport to and from the Morris Town place from fans, it wasn't appendicitis or a urinary infection -- and, if I were a sociology major, I could do a paper on the 2 different ERs, I suppose. Thanks.

Oh love. Be careful won't you. Mr Wol was really laid low by his stones but then he didn't make nice round one - oh no - his had corners that caught in things and stopped them passing. treble OW!

What to do for the best depends very much on what sort of stones you have. I hope the strainer nets you a nice, analyzable bit of grit.

From: [identity profile] sammywol.livejournal.com

Chances are there will be no grit. Boo! But it is always worth a try. Blood tests can tell the docs a lot though they might not bother unless you get a repeat and here's hoping you don't.
