Okay, I think I've got a workable formula.

Step zero: Close all windows and programs.
Step one: Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. Do not hit Ctrl-Alt and an arrow, or the view will rotate.
Step two: Select Stand By from Shut Down menu.
Step three: Unplug machine. The tiny lightbulb icon will be a pulsing blue.
Step four: Close cover.

I did all of this about... 12 hours ago. Power was on, power button was lit up blue, but screen stayed dark. It woke up fast when I hit keys or mouse or something other than the power button, which is, after all, the point of the exercise.

The only problem that might happen with not closing everything is if it runs out of juice while asleep.

Right. Okay, 94% power at about 10 to midnight when I left it on stand by for about 3 hours.
