I've got a desktop, an old laptop, a new laptop, and a Palm IIIxe. The IIIxe backs up onto the old laptop.

I backed up the pda and created a text file of some stuff I was working on. I tried to copy it onto a floppy disc, as the laptop has a hot swappable floppy disc drive. Unfortunately, the drive and the laptop appear not to be on speaking terms. Trying to engage the former causes the latter to turn off.

Hm. Well, I figured I could put the Palm software onto my new laptop, and make that the place I back up my pda. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex reminded me that the hot sync device I use needs a port that my laptop doesn't have. We don't currently have a cable that lets you turn the kind of connection I've got into a USB connection. And I didn't want to get into infrared beaming.

Supposedly, my old laptop and my desktop are networked with mnemex's computer. Well, they sort of are, but they don't talk to each other. So, mnemex walked me through putting a copy of the file on his computer from my old laptop, and then making a copy on my desktop.

My desktop has been fairly flaky, though still functional. I'd like to put my files onto my new laptop, wipe everything from my desktop, and start from scratch, reinstalling everything. My original plan was to put it onto one of mnemex's SD cards, but these cards all had mnemex's files on them.

mnemex had me put everything into a big zip file, and send it to his computer, and then copy to my new laptop. But, when he checked the file sizes, they didn't match. So, we set up my desktop to copy the file to his desktop a second time.

About three quarters of the way through the copying, mnemex said that it would be faster to use an SD card, and he had now cleared one. He suggested that the card race with the putty connection.

The file copied onto the card before it finished copying onto mnemex's desktop. It didn't quite finish copying to my new laptop before it finished copying onto his desktop, but it was a near thing.
